When Charles Wolfe had written this song, and was arranging it to the exquisite old Irish melody called " Granimachree," his feelings so overpowered him, that to give their expression he immediately wrote the well-known poem, " To Mary," which begins—
" If I had thought thou could'st have died, I might not weep for thee; But I forgot, when by thy side That thou could'st mortal be." |
